Free Ways to Increase Website Traffic
If you are just starting out with your new website and you don't have much of a budget, you are probably looking for some free ways to increase website traffic. For those who are just starting out, there are a lot of free ways to get traffic. They may not lead to much - but definitely not a bad start. Some of the options are to submit articles to article directories, write guest blog posts, write blog comments and exchange services for site exposure.
Article Submission
You can write articles that are related to your website and submit them to article directories like Ezine Articles. This is one of the first things you should do when getting your website off the ground. Take the top 10 article submission sites, and submit 1-2 articles to each of those directories every other day or so. If you write good articles that pertain to what your website has to offer, you will be able to get 20-100 visitors per day from your submissions, depending on how many articles you are submitting per week. This is a lot of work, so you do not want to be doing it for too long. This is just a great way to get off the ground.
Link Directories
There are a lot of quality link directories that you can submit your site to for free. Be careful though, because most link directories are garbage and will just hurt your search engine rankings. You should only submit to quality link directories. Also, make sure you do not submit your site to more than 30 directories. If you have too many links from directories and not a lot of other links, your site will seem spammy and you will be penalized by the search engines. Some of the more high quality directories like DMOZ are very hard to get listed in. That makes the links even more valuable. Before you try to get your site submitted, make sure you have a high quality site. You should have unique and valuable information for your users. If you have just a standard site that comes a dime a dozen, then you will not get listed in any of these directories. Take your time to build your site out before submitting your link.
Guest Blog Posts
This is perhaps the best way to not only get a good amount of direct traffic, but it is also a great way to boost your search engine rankings. There are probably hundreds of blogs out there on the topic that your website is on, or something similar. Email those site owners and politely ask for the opportunity to write a guest post for their website. 40% of the time, they will tell you yes, which is not a bad conversion rate. Write up a great guest post and you will be able to link back to your website a couple of times within your article.
If you write 3 guest posts per day for various blogs, you will see a huge rate of success. This alone, could lead to hundreds of visitors per day over time. The only problem with this method is that you have to be a good writer. If you are not a good writer, nobody will want your article posted on their website. Your only other option here, is to hire a professional writer to write the guest posts for you. It is worth the money, but then of course - it would no longer be free.
Blog Comments
This can either help you or hurt you. Be careful with how you approach this method, as it is not recommended to go around spamming blogs all over the Internet. Blog commenting can be great if you are adding value to the blog post and legitimately commenting on a topic. If you are just going from blog to blog posting "hey great blog post, that was really good!", then you are going to get yourself into trouble and you will waste a lot of time. A more acceptable approach is to find blog posts that pertain to your websites category and getting into a legitimate discussion via a comment. That will not only add value to that blog, but it will bring people back to your blog as well.
Exchange Services for Site Exposure
If you offer any kind of services, such as site design, content creation, programming or anything else another website owner might be interested in - you can exchange your services for links and advertising back to your website. This is a good approach, but could be looked at as costing money, as you are giving your services for free. The above approaches are probably more likely to be used, but you could get a lot more using this type of approach.
Of course, nothing is free. Even all of these approaches listed above are not really free. Your time is worth a lot, and everything that is listed takes a lot of time. Nothing comes free in life, and that especially holds true when it comes to building traffic to a website. You may be able to come up with different ways to use your time to pay for traffic instead of money, but either way - you are going to have to make investments to get traffic back to your site. In the end though, it is well worth every dollar and hour you put into generating traffic, if done the right way.
